THE LIVE PAINTING PROCESS

1

CONSULTATION & CONTRACTING

Contact me to discuss your event. I’ll give you some helpful information you need to know. If you decide to book me, we’ll enter into a contract to save the date. Once you’ve signed the contract, an invoice will be sent to collect the deposit. We’ll keep in contact about any needs you have ahead of the event.

2

SETUP & EVENT

I will coordinate the appropriate time with you before your event for setup. Setup takes around 30-45 minutes, and I bring all supplies needed. At the agreed upon time, I will begin the painting process. Guests can watch and engage with me as I illuminate the canvas with a variety of colors and gestures.

3

FINISHED WORK & FINALIZATION

By the end of your event (in most instances), the finished painting will be available for final viewing, gifting, etc. I will work with you on options to take home that day or plan a potential future pickup. Final remainder payment will be collected to close out our contract.

LIVE PAINTING FAQs

  • Live painting is an improvisational performance in which a visual artist creates a painting in front of a live audience during the duration of an event. A live painting performance artist creates the artwork from start to finish as a method of entertainment. Unlike purchasing a piece created in the artist's studio, a live painting session includes the whole performance from start to finish. It is a way to engage your guests and create fantastic memories.

  • I am a long-time artist and love to entertain! I engage the audience, welcoming questions and comments, and help create a fun and creative environment at your event. For fundraisers, I help promote your cause with advertisement and conversation about your purpose. At concerts, I paint with the music, encouraging your audience to really get involved in the moment and the movement. I am very personable and quick to make your guests feel comfortable at your event, and help create a more involved environment for everyone. If you choose to have a guest win the finished piece, this creates even more incentive for guests to stay and enjoy the whole event.

  • Places like the UW Memorial Union Terrace, Majestic Theater, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), Barnwood Events, Lake Windsor Country Club, Malt House Tavern, and more! If you have a space you’d like to see live painting in, contact Hanna. Let’s chat!

  • Absolutely! I always welcome onlookers, conversation, and questions. I am accustomed to answering questions during my sessions, if the situation permits. Certain circumstances, such as being up on stage away from the crowd, obviously do not make for a conversational performance. I am there to entertain, to have fun, and to engage when I am able. However, please be respectful of the situation. If I seem very involved in the piece and am not able to pause, please be patient. I will answer questions once I have a moment to step away from my work. If I need to return to the work while we’re talking, please take no offense. I’m simply trying to keep the momentum going and to finish the piece in my allotted time.

  • A minimum space of 6'x6' and a nearby outlet are typically the only requirements. I provide all basic live painting related materials including an easel, canvas, paint, brushes, palettes, drop cloths, lights, and a small table for my materials. Any other accommodations can be discussed during your consultation.

  • Before your event, we will decide whether the finished piece is intended to be auctioned off, won by an event attendee, donated, sold, kept by the host, or goes home with the artist. In most cases, the piece is finished and ready to hang the same day as the event, which makes handing it off to the owner quite simple.

  • No. I use low-odor acrylic paints and inks, and provide my own drop cloths to protect your surfaces from any spills. In the event that a spill does occur, I act quickly to ensure that any mess is cleaned up. Please contact me if you have specific concerns about your space, and I can adjust my preparation accordingly.

  • You can choose to auction off the piece at your fundraiser through a silent auction or raffle. If you'd like to auction or raffle the piece, please let Hanna know so she can come equipped with materials. This is a great way to gain more income for your cause!

  • Contact me to discuss your event. Price range varies, but I am always accommodating to various budgets. Commitments start around $300 depending on the type of event.

WEDDINGS: A UNIQUE WAY TO CAPTURE YOUR DAY

WHAT AND WHY?

As an abstract artist, the painting I provide captures the essence of the night. I leave the realistic representations to the photographers, and I get the privilege of capturing the liveliness, excitement, and mood. Since images of the attendees and event will be captured through photographs, the painting I provide would be a separate, personalized way to capture the fun, love, and emotion that comes out during the event. My work for all live paintings follows suit with my other work, and I encourage you to check out my work in the gallery here.

Weddings are a very fun place for an abstract live artist to be present. The reception is the most typical time during the event to have an abstract painter. If requested, I can also include excerpts from your vows into the painting at no extra cost, as my work includes illegible text for each piece. I'm happy to work with the wedding colors to create a customized piece that will be reminiscent of your day.

PRICING + BOOKING

My general rate for live painting starts at $250/hr with a 1.5 hour minimum painting time commitment (up to 4 hours), plus tax. If travel outside of Dane County WI is required, there is a $0.70/mile standard mileage fee plus $15/hour driving time. Anything in Dane County doesn't require travel expenses. The pricing listed includes the completed personalized abstract painting, which would be finished by the end of the allotted time. That way you can have it right away after your reception. For reference, 2-3 hours is generally a popular amount of time, but it's completely up to you on what your needs are. I always include illegible text in my work, so if requested, I can also include vows to make it extra personal (no charge for that).

If you choose to hire me as your event artist, I will provide a short contract stating so. Once the contract is signed, an invoice for a 50% deposit to retain my services, and a separate invoice will be sent later for the remainder amount, which is due by the day of the event. If the event needs to be canceled or rescheduled to a date I'm not available, anything paid in advance (minus the deposit) will be refunded to you. In the unlikely event that I would have to cancel my appearance, only 50% of your deposit would be retained. That covers the cost of materials specific to your event.

TIMELINE + STEPS

  1. Contact Hanna about your event.

  2. Hanna will respond with information and a contract if applicable.

  3. Once the contract is signed, she will send an invoice for a 50% deposit within 2 business days. The deposit is due within 15 days of the invoice.

  4. 15 days before the event, a remainder invoice will be sent, and the remainder is due before the event.

  5. On the day of the event, Hanna will arrive about an hour ahead of time to set up. She will paint for the allotted time and provide the finished painting at the end of the event (or as discussed).

WEDDING FAQ

  • Yes. Your venue may ask for a standard $1,000,000 policy with them listed as the other insured party. If hired for your event, please be sure to let me know the venue’s stipulations. Please always let the venue know of an added vendor, so all insurance considerations can be made.

  • The reception is the most common part of the event to have a live painter. This allows time and space for attendees to watch, ask questions, and enjoy the process. Please feel free to discuss your event with me, and we can come up with a plan on what works for you.

  • Yes! I can create additional paintings ahead of the event for your wedding party. They will be one-of-a-kind but can follow a common theme or color scheme as requested to be relative to the couple’s finished painting.

  • 100% always yes! I love love in all ways, shapes, and forms. I’m honored to be a part of any loving couple’s special day.

  • That is up to you! It is important to remember that the couple may have very specific plans that they don’t want altered. However, having a live painter can certainly be a pleasant and welcome surprise! Please be sure that a live painter is NOT a surprise to the venue. Make sure the venue is aware of an added vendor for insurance purposes.
